6/30/17: At 0209 Company 20 was alerted for a confirmed structure fire on Old Cheat Road. Engine 201 responded with 4 members followed closely by Unit 202 with 2 members and was given initial size-up of a confirmed mobile home fire which was endangering an apartment building 15-20 feet from the involved structure. Engine 201 arrived on scene, 20-1 established command and confirmed a fully involved trailer with exposure to an apartment building and possibility of power line hazards, and placed (1) 1 3/4″ attack line in place for initial fire attack. Engine 123, Tanker 172 and Unit 202 arrived soon after Engine 201 and began various fire attack, water supply and exposure protection tasks. Due to the continued danger to the exposure, 20-1 then called for additional manpower and two (2) additional tankers for water supply (Co. 15 and Co. 16).  Although the fire building ending up being a total loss, the quick and efficient actions of all units on scene resulted in only minimal siding damage and loss of one window to the exposure building.

6/15/2017: Company 20 was alerted to assist Co. 14, Co.12 and Co.24 on scene of a MVC involving a tractor trailer with fuel leak. E-201 responded and upon arrival was tasked by incident command with traffic control and to assist with fluid mitigation to prevent fuel and fluids from entering Cheat Lake. While on scene E-201 was also dispatched and responded for a reported structure fire (found to be a malfunctioning HVAC unit) and responded at special request by Command 14 for a reported choking. After clearing the two additional calls E-201 returned to I-68 to further assist with that incident until the tractor trailer could be cleared from the roadway and then returned to service.

5/29/2017: At 0231 Company 20 was alerted to respond 3rd due for a confirmed structure fire at the Lewellyn Road and Route 857 intersection in Cheat Lake. Engine 201 responded to the incident with four personnel and while en-route was alerted by CLVFD E141 (first arriving unit) of a two story single family residence that was heavily involved with fire with cars in the garage and unknown occupancy. Soon after arrival on scene Command 14 also advised that live electrical lines had burnt through and were now live on the ground which was hampering initial fire attack. Engine 201 arrived on scene and was tasked by Command 14 to man a 2 1/2 attack line for defensive operations until power could be cut to the building. Approximately fifteen minutes after first units arrived on scene it was able to be confirmed that all occupants were out of the residence on vacation. After power was secured SCVFD personnel were tasked with various extinguishment and overhaul operations before being released by Command 14 to return to service.

At 2223 hours on Friday, May 19, Company 20 was dispatched to assist Star City Police Department with traffic control in the area of Pleasant Hill Avenue and Leeway Street in the Town of Star City. Engine 201 and Unit 202 responded with a total of 5 personnel. Upon arrival to the scene, firefighters noted a damaged underground water main resulting in several hundred gallons of water per minute being released and traveling down Leeway Street. The fast moving water was damaging both infrastructure and businesses in the area. Firefighters moved bystanders and vehicles from the area while establishing a perimeter around the leak. Firefighters then utilized an estimated 1000 pounds of gravel, soil, and sandbags in conjunction with plastic sheeting to implement the hazardous materials techniques of diking and diversion. The water was able to be rerouted to the opposite side of the roadway where it was no longer a threat to businesses and infrastructure. Assistance was then provided to help with monitoring and cleanup in impacted businesses. Star City Street Department was able to stop flow of water to the damaged main and began repairs shortly thereafter. Company 20 units returned to service.

4/22/2017: Company 20 was alerted for a two vehicle (truck vs. tractor trailer) high speed MVC on I-79 South in the area of the 159 mile marker. Engine 209, Squad 203 and Medic 21 responded to scene and upon arrival found both vehicles still in the roadway with heavy front end damage to the truck. Despite the substantial damage to the truck the occupant was able to removed without extrication and both the truck and semi driver refused transport via EMS. Company 20 units remained on scene providing traffic control and fluid management until the vehicles could be removed from the roadway and then returned to service.

3/18/17: Company 20 was dispatched to a two vehicle side impact collision on Chaplin Road and the southbound 155 mile marker intersection. Squad 203 and Medic 29 responded to the incident along with MonEMS 74 and 76 and West Virginia State Police. Upon arrival crews found a two vehicle side impact collision with moderate damage to the vehicles and occupants still in the vehicles. No extrication was needed to access patients and so crews from all responding agencies proceeded to set up traffic control, stabilize and package three patients for transport, provide scene shielding/safety, and mitigate fluids leaking onto the roadway. After PD and EMS cleared from scene Squad 203 continued providing traffic control and scene safety/shielding until the cars could be removed from the roadway and then returned to service.

3/13/17: Company 20 was alerted for a high speed, single vehicle MVC with rollover in the area of mile marker 159 on I-79N. Squad 203, Unit 202 and Medic 29 responded to the incident and upon arrival found one vehicle off the roadway on its top, but single occupant out of the vehicle. Due to confusion by motorists unfamiliar with the area and the incident being in such close proximity to the WV/PA state line our Pennsylvanian mutual aid department (Mount Morris Co. 18) received the call first and were on scene prior to Co. 20 units working with EMS to stabilize the occupant for transport. Company 20 provided incident shielding and traffic control until Mon EMS transported the patient to Ruby Memorial and the vehicle was able to be removed from scene.

3/4/17: Company 20 was dispatched for a reported MVC with rollover on West Run Road near Stewartstown Road. A Monongalia County Sheriff’s department unit who was in the area and arrived first on scene reported a single SUV on its roof and over an embankment with no one in or around the vehicle. Squad 203 responded and upon arriving on scene completed a secondary search with MON EMS and Mon County SD to ensure that there was no victim(s) at the incident. Squad 203’s crew then performed traffic control and scene lighting for towing personnel during the extensive vehicle recovery before returning to service.

3/3/17: Company 20 was dispatched 3rd due to Wildlife Hill Road for a structure fire. Initial dispatch of the call was for a general fire alarm that was quickly upgraded to confirmed structure fire when the residents called in to report that the rear of their house was on fire. Engine 209 and Unit 202 responded to the incident and upon arrival were tasked by Co 14 command with deploying E209’s apartment load due to responding units being unable to get up the icy driveway. Unfortunately the remote location of the structure, hazardous early morning road conditions, strong wind conditions and lack of definitive water supply caused the structure to be a total loss. Company 20 units remained on scene for approximately six hours during the initial dispatch and were called upon again later in the day to assist with a rekindle of the structure.

2/18/17: Company 20 was dispatched to a reported tractor trailer fire on I-79 northbound near the WV/PA state line at the 159MM. Engine 201, Engine 209, Squad 203 and Medic 21 responded within minutes of dispatch and upon arrival found the trailer portion of the tractor trailer heavily involved in fire. All traffic northbound was immediately shutdown while crews operated to control the fire which appeared to have started in the area of the trailer’s wheels. Luckily, the driver of the semi was able to notice the flames early, pull to a safe area and remove the tractor from the fully loaded trailer (carrying frozen broccoli). Thanks to the quick and efficient work of Co. 20 personnel on scene the fire was able to be contained to the wheels and outside back portion of the trailer without extension into the box of the trailer or the payload. After primary extinguishment of the fire the left lane of I-79 N was able to be reopened to traffic while awaiting WVDOH to take over traffic control. Once WVDOH arrived on scene primary traffic control was turned over to the WVDOH crew and all Co. 20 personnel returned to service.
